Ugandan energy companies keen to partner with T&T
By Trinidad Guardian         July 20, 2010    03:02:00 AM
Tullow Oil and its partners are set to invest some US$10 billion into the newly-found oil and gas reservoirs in the Lake Albert region of Uganda, including a major state-of-the-art refinery.

The Energy Chamber of T&T and its ten-person energy services trade mission to East Africa learnt that yesterday at a forum organised by the Uganda Investment Authority and the T&T High Commission. “In a land-locked country with no tradition in the oil and gas industry, the development of these resources is challenging, but offers major opportunities for new business ventures,” said the Energy Chamber in a statement issued from Uganda.

“Private-sector companies in Uganda are keen to partner with the companies from T&T who have made the decision to work in East Africa.” The chamber said the trade mission was welcomed by Peter Lokeris, Uganda’s Minister of State in the Ministry of Energy and Resource Development.

Lokeris said he had visited Trinidad in April 2009—his first overseas trip as minister—to learn from T&T’s success in the energy industry. He told the trade mission he was impressed by what T&T had achieved and the scale of the country’s industry.

“The issues of training, capacity building and local content are on the front burner in Uganda and the private sector here are clearly looking to the Energy Chamber to help them address these difficult issues,” the chamber said. Later this week, the trade mission will take part in the private-sector forum of the 15th African Union Conference, with 54 heads of state and their delegations scheduled to visit Uganda. From there the mission goes on to Tanzania, Rwanda and Kenya.
